Abstract

Gaseous, aqueous, and solid samples were collected for analysis of polycyclic organic matter (POM), including polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from two facilities which burn municipal waste. PCDDs and PCDFs were only observed in the stack gas and associated particulates from the facility burning 100 percent raw refuse. At the times sampled in this facility, 2,3,7,8-TCDD averaged 0.41 ng/dscm (dry standard cubic meter) in the stack effluent and other dioxins and furans ranged from 2.5 ng/dscm for the otachlorodibenzodioxins to 300 ng/dscm for the trichlorodibenzofurans. No PCDDs or PCDFs were detected in any of the samples from the second facility, which burned coal and refuse derived fuel, where the detection limit in the stack gas samples was less than 0.25 ng/dscm for TCDDs and TCDFs.
