Abstract

This illness, otherwise known as the Vomiting Sickness of Jamaica, has been recognized on this island for many years. Its clinical features have been reviewed by Hill (1952), Patrick et al. (1955), and Stuart and co-workers (1955). It characteristically occurs in poorly nourished Jamaicans either sporadically or in small family outbreaks. The highest incidence is during the months from December to March although occasional outbreaks occur at any time of year. The disorder is uncommon in infants. This is thought to be due to the fact that infants are usually breast-fed and thus protected from any noxious dietary agents or severe protein depletion. Children between one and ten years are most commonly affected.
