Abstract

In traditional grammatical descriptions of English, Word-formation deals only with lexical structure, i.e. with the internal structure of the units of the linguistic system. It is not relevant to the description of the relations which are contracted between these units in the syntactic structure of the system. This view is found in the description of e.g. Koziol (1937), Kruisinga (1931), Poutsma (1928), Sweet (1900) and Zandvoort (1948).
