Abstract
The assumptions underlying linear models for long-range transport and deposition are examined. We see that the linear parameterization of the wet removal of the SO2cannot be justified. This suggests that linear models might be inadequate for the examination of emission control scenarios. However, we show that by assuming “efficient” removal of SO2we can construct a model which avoids explicit incorporation of the wet removal process. The validity of this model is demonstrated by comparing model predictions with observations of annually averaged wet deposition at 62 stations in Eastern North America (ENA).
