Abstract

Many of the so-called developing countries have, in their hey day, made major contributions to the foundations of modern biomedical science. For instance, amongst the Islamic nations, the early instruction of medicine, surgical practice, and the study of anatomy in 14th and 15th Century Iran, Turkey and Egypt demonstrates considerable intellectual ferment and learning.
