Abstract

Primary epithelial tumors of the upper urinary tract often present a diagnostic challenge and therapeutic dilemma. Considerable uncertainty exists regarding treatment of these uncommon neoplasms, especially with regard to the selection of patients who might benefit from conservative (kidney-sparing) surgery. Therapeutic guidelines have emanated largely from retrospective analysis of different surgical approaches, or from pathologic mapping of nephroureterectomy specimens, since accurate preoperative clinical staging could not always be obtained.
