Model for Thermodynamics of Ionic Surfactants: Effect of Electrolytes on Osmotic and Activity Coefficients

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

Equations have been derived for osmotic and activity coefficients of ionic surfactant solutions. The equations are based on a single-step association process that includes counterion binding and a thermodynamic treatment of a micellar solution as a mixed electrolyte. The model includes the effects of ion-ion interactions and provides a basis for a self-consistent treatment of the thermodynamic properties of surfactant solutions. The model has previously been applied to experimental data for aqueous surfactant solutions and demonstrated to provide quantitative agreement with a relatively small number of adjustable parameters. The extension of the model to include surfactant-water-electrolyte solutions is presented, and model equations are compared with experimental data.
