Abstract

Clinicians working in the area of stress prevention and treatment are likely to benefit from learning how hypnosis can increase their therapeutic effectiveness. This chapter will attempt to provide this learning experience with the following information: a brief history of clinical hypnosis; definitions and explanations of basic concepts; mechanisms of action in hypnotic treatment; clinical applications of hypnosis for prevention and treatment of the stress response; treatment precautions; and summary.
