Abstract
Bias Cabrera and Vladimir Kresin asked me to include in this volume a selection of my papers. Whenever I have seen this done in the past with other authors, I have wanted to know something more of the background to the papers chosen. Why those papers were chosen and what led up to the work reported in them. The papers themselves are largely stripped of history, so to correct for this, I thought it would be interesting to provide something of a commentary, to give a feel for the context in which the work was done and what inspired them. We have lived in exciting times and I would like to convey some of this excitement to the reader, reading this today. In addition, this brief commentary might save the casual reader the necessity of reading all the papers !
