Abstract

In May 1974, or about 21 years ago, when the first International Meeting of ISTRY was held in this beautiful city of Padova, I had the great pleasure of making personal acquaintance with Prof. Luigi Musajo, whom I had heard about so much while I was in Japan. At this meeting, I presented two lectures, one on oxygenases and the other on indoleamine dioxygenase. I still remember his warm and encouraging remarks and was greatly impressed by his science as well as his personality. It is indeed a great honor and pleasure for me to visit Padova again and to present the Luigi Musajo Award lecture to this distinguished audience. In memory of Prof. Luigi Musajo, I respectfully dedicate this lecture, and describe briefly our past work on tryptophan and oxygenases and the on-going work concerning the mystery of sleep.
