Abstract

Fibroblast cultures and kidney cultures were initiated from three male and two female animals trapped in Southern Vermont and New Hampshire, USA, and another male from Texas, USA. All gave comparable karyotypes. The autosomes are arranged in groups, those considered submetacentrics first, next acrocentrics and last metacentrics. It will be seen that there is some variation (the first pair in the last row of the male is clearly metacentric, that of the female is submetacentric). Pairing is arbitrary and it is extremely difficult to distinguish the X chromosome. With radioautography only slight asynchrony is evident. The long arms of the first three pairs are distinctly late replicating and are usually “fuzzy.” No significant differences are detected in the karyotype of G. sabrinus (Northern flying squirrel) and this species will therefore not be depicted in this Atlas.
