Abstract
Perhaps the organism we have isolated which has elicited the most interest (and some controversy) has been Thermoplasma. The credit for this organism goes first to Gary Darland, who was smart enough to recognize that something others would have considered to be a precipitate was indeed living, and to Robert Belly, who (among other important contributions in my laboratory), showed the significance and distribution of the organism.
