Abstract
The bitunicate ascus as defined by Luttrell (1951) is surrounded by two walls that differ in their ability to extend. The outer, inextensible wall (ectotunica) ruptures when the pressure within the mature ascus increases, whereas the extensible inner wall (endotunica) elongates. The ascospores are pressed out by a vacuole that regulates the inner pressure of the ascus during spore ejaculation.
