The Ascus with an Apical Pore: Development, Composition, and Function

  • Chapter
Ascomycete Systematics

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Microbiology ((SSMIC))

Abstract

In those ascomycetes distinguished by the possession of a functionally unitunicate ascus with some kind of apical annulus, the morphology and structure of the ascus shows considerable variation. The presence or absence of certain apical structures, variations in their morphology, and the structural details of the ascus wall are now regarded as important diagnostic features in modern schemes of classification.
