Abstract

Size of place statistics in the General Social Survey show an interesting difference between women and men — as age increases the proportion of men living in rural areas increases relative to the proportion of women. There is little difference between the sexes in the level of suburban dwelling, but the highest ratio of suburbanites is in the 35 to 54 age range. Overall about 25 percent of the GSS respondents live in the suburbs. Generational change appears in the comparatively high proportion of older age groups who have lived on farms in their early lives.
