Abstract
The DSM-III-R criteria for substance-dependence disorders represent significantly favorable revisions toward a valid and reliable diagnostic description (1,2). However, further improvements may be indicated. The following discussion attempts to critically review the validity and utility of the DSM-III-R for clinicians and researchers and to provide suggestions for consideration of further changes in the diagnostic categories (see Appendices I and II).
