Abstract

Opioid addiction is a widespread phenomenon affecting our society. This chapter examines the evolution of addictive opioid use in this century. It also addresses issues of diagnosis, medical versus nonmedical use, pharmacological and non-pharmacological effects, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies.
