Light and Color in the Outdoors

Abstract

Let us begin our observations concerning the scattering of light by taking a walk beside a busy canal or river. Many of the passing boats have oil or petrol engines that emit fine smoke which looks blue against a dark background. If, however, the smoke is seen against the light background of the sky, it does not appear to be blue at all, but yellow. It is clear then that the blueness is not an inherent property of the smoke in the way that the blue of blue glass is, but results from the smoke dispersing the blue rays more than the yellow or red ones.
