Abstract
Certain gases in the atmosphere, commonly called greenhouse gases, absorb and emit radiation at wavelengths at which the Earth’s surface emits. Consequently, some of the radiation emitted to space through the top of the atmosphere emanates not from the surface but from within the atmosphere. As the intensity of radiation is proportional to the fourth power of the temperature of the emitter, and the atmosphere is mostly colder than the surface, these gases reduce the radiative loss of energy to space. This is called the “greenhouse effect.”
