Diagnosis and Medical Management of Recurrent and Chronic Sinusitis in Children

  • Chapter
Diseases of the Sinuses

Abstract

Although the precise incidence of acute, recurrent, or chronic sinusitis in children has not been established, it is a very common problem in children because of their increased susceptibility to upper respiratory infections (URIs), which are frequently complicated by bacterial infections. Allergic rhinitis is another common disorder in children, and has also been implicated as a frequent predisposing factor for the development of recurrent or persistent sinusitis. Furthermore, because the symptoms of allergic disorders and sinus disease are similar, the diagnosis of one or the other will often be overlooked or misdiagnosed.
