Tumors of the Paranasal Sinuses

  • Chapter
Diseases of the Sinuses

Abstract

This chapter is based on a distillation of the literature and personal experience of over 500 patients with sinonasal neoplasia. These rare, but fascinating tumors pose significant problems of management in that they frequently commence with innocuous symptoms that are often ignored by both patient and clinician for considerable periods of time and are thus extensive lesions when diagnosed. The sinonasal area is also one of greatest histological diversity, including tumors of idiosyncratic behavior that may recur after 20 yr. These factors limit the usefulness of the TNM classification and may invalidate 5-yr survival rates. Add to this the difficulties of oncological resection and cosmetic rehabilitation in an area closely related to the cranial cavity and orbit, and one of the most challenging areas of paranasal disease emerges.
