Abstract

The final chapter of this book looks ahead to possible future scenarios in which biometric identity verification may play a significant role. In this context it fully acknowledges the explosion of interest in mobile devices and the obvious extrapolation of how biometrics may be soon come to be used in ways beyond the obvious. It examines how biometrics may or may not be useful for protecting against the fraudulent use of devices and for protecting transactions made using those devices, exploding several popularly held myths in this respect. It continues into the realm of privacy and data protection, an area of intense interest to many, especially when considering the future implications of current practices. This section should certainly be studied by those seeking to implement such systems. It is a logical extrapolation to explore the use of third-party environments and consider the impact upon privacy and data protection when adopting this model of operation. In addition, there are sound operational reasons why implementing agencies should think very carefully before embracing this model. The chapter concludes with an appraisal of operational considerations which, for many, will prove enlightening, before moving on to final conclusions.
