Abstract

The use of IVUS in clinical practice is an important diagnostic tool used for quantitative assessment of coronary artery disease. The principle of IVUS imaging is based on the oscillatory movement (expansion and contraction) of a piezoelectric transducer (crystal) in order to produce sound waves when electrically excited. The generated sound waves by the transducers propagate through the different tissues and are reflected according to the acoustic properties of the tissue it travels through.
