Abstract
With the advent of 500-channel digital TV, there is a need for sophisticated user interfaces that would enable the user to take full advantage of programme diversity. This paper describes the design of a conversational interface to an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG.) After reviewing dialogue modelling issues, we introduce our approach, based on a specialization of speech acts theory. On the basis of linguistic data, we suggest that besides specialized speech acts, it is necessary to consider an interpretative approach to speech act recognition.
