Abstract

In the previous chapters, we explained how infrared thermography can be employed for the inspection of materials and structures by means of thermal transient perturbation. More precisely, we reviewed in Chap. 4 many different methods and image processing techniques useful for the TNDE inspection task. In Chap. 4, the thermal stimulation was accomplished by means of lamps, thermal radiators, lasers, air/water jets, etc. In all cases, an external thermal stimulation was performed (with respect to the workpiece). We saw that thermal contrasts obtained over defective areas were generally small, of the order of a few degrees only since the thermal stimulation heated (cooled) the surface under inspection by 10 °C at most (e.g. Fig. 4.11). As discussed in Sect. 1.5, one of the limitations of TNDE is precisely the difficulty to obtain a uniform, short, high intensity energy deposition over a wide surface with the added constraint of not causing damage.
