Abstract

Breast disease is common with 16% of all women seeking surgical advice (Nicols, Waters and Wheeler 1980), while benign breast disease may affect up to 50% of women (Haagenson 1971). Public awareness of the breast cancer risk of 1:17 with an annual incidence of 50–200:100000 (Pike et al. 1983) has increased attendance rates in surgical clinics and promoted the development of specialist breast clinics.
