Abstract
Urinary incontinence, though common in all age groups, is particularly prevalent in old age. Because of the associated social stigma, very few with the problem will admit to its presence when questioned directly. As a result the true prevalence rate is unknown, though studies in old people have suggested an overall prevalence of 20%, with the extent in hospital populations varying from 12.9% to 48%.
