Abstract

Surgery is almost invariably associated with pain and very few patients do not require post-operative analgesia. It is difficult to provide consistently effective post-operative pain relief while avoiding side-effects. Although standards are rapidly rising, the failure to provide comprehensive post-operative pain relief to all patients has been rightly criticised as one of modern medicine’s greatest failings.
