Abstract
Medical imaging research and development efforts started in the early 1970s. The field has gradually matured as a scientific discipline during the past 30 years. This field requires knowledge in the physical sciences including engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, as well as the biomedical sciences, including medicine and biology. Some significant contributions of medical imaging in healthcare include the development of various medical imaging modalities, 3-D rendering, image processing, image fusion, image (computer)-aided diagnosis and surgery. This progress is important in the formulation of the concept of imaging informatics, because the products become the cornerstones of this new discipline. The development of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) in the 1990s provides very large image databases allowing the exploration of large-scale medical imaging applications. Research and development using large image databases is loosely called medical imaging informatics.
