Abstract
A field is an algebraic object consisting of a set with two operations on it, addition and multiplication, which are required to satisfy certain conditions. To avoid a certain amount of repetition in stating these conditions (and thus to also make the conditions easier to remember), we first talk about sets with only one operation.
