Abstract
Electronic medical records (EMRs) are becoming increasingly prevalent across clinical settings, and like any other new technology, they have the potential both to enhance and to compromise the quality of medical care and patient safety. This chapter provides an introduction to the basic quality and safety issues pertinent to the adoption and use of EMRs by practicing surgeons.
