Abstract
While there has been a considerable amount of research that has focused on the effects of HIV/AIDS on gay men, there is a dearth of literature that concentrates on experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) gay men with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the chapter is to provide an overview of the multiple ways that HIV/AIDS affects AAPI gay men. First, we will provide a historical and cultural context of the AAPI population as a way of understanding AAPI gay men’s identity development and mental health. We will also discuss the current epidemiological findings involving AAPI gay men living with HIV and AIDS, as well as the types of discrimination and stigma that this group may encounter. We will conclude by sharing recommendations for effective and culturally appropriate approaches with this population, including implications for research and clinical practice.
