Abstract

Social patterns are those that offer us the chance to interact with others, satisfying Social Contact needs. Many social patterns fuel the virality of apps, giving those that implement them well the potential to become hits joining the likes of Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. This has made social patterns very popular, but like gameful patterns, they need to be applied wisely.

Notes

  1. 1.

It’s worthy of note that at the time of writing, of the seven user-given definitions of ‘facebook poke’ at Urban Dictionary ( www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=facebook%20poke ), six make reference to flirtation. As one user puts it: “The Facebook poke is especially useful in the process of overanalyzing a potential romantic interest’s feelings about you based solely on impersonal online interactions.”

  4. 4.

In the context of open discussion, the Stack Exchange model would be a poor choice. The model purposefully suppresses discussion in order to float up important questions and important answers.

  5. 5.

Perhaps a guarantee of the threshold of upvotes required for an official response could be utilized, such as with the White House Petitions site. Even with questions being upvoted, without guarantee of response, the community could still feel unheard as with the infamous Woody Harrelson Ask Me Anything on Reddit. Harrelson answered questions only about his upcoming movie “Rampart” and failed to answer the top questions, enraging Redditors. This has led to future “Ask Me Anything” participants to include something like “Also ask me about Rampart” in their posts.
