The advent of the World Wide Web, in 1990, brought about a massive increase in the use of the Internet. This was made possible by the introduction of the Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP). Tim Berners-Lee first implemented HTTP in 1990–91 at CERN, the European Center for High-Energy Physics in Geneva, Switzerland.
