Abstract
The term biodiversity refers to the total variability of life on earth. In the oceans about 300,000 species are known but it is likely that there are many more, undescribed species. This chapter discusses the biodiversity of a selection of marine habitats including the deep ocean, the open oceans, and, in the coastal zone, coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses.
