Chapter 4 examines the design of instruments for measuring the total amount of radiation, or spectrally restricted subsets of the total radiation, reaching or reflected from Earth’s surface. A detailed discussion of the design of pyranometers is given, to illustrate how to transform design principles into working instruments. An introduction is given to using light-emitting diodes as spectrally selective sunlight detectors. For each instrument, calibration procedures and applications are discussed.
