The author states that increasing scarcities (fresh water, energy) and rising energy prices are opening up new opportunities for saline wastelands. Biomassbased renewable energy is threatening food production and virginal forests. Non-conventional resources like salinized land and brackish water offer good opportunities for the production of biomass when suitable (halophytic and salt-tolerant) species are being used.
The Colorado Delta Pilot Project, developed by the OASE Foundation, aims at the development of a replicable model for the reclamation of saline wastelands using halophytes and brackish water for the production of woody biomass. The first results are promising and the next step will be to develop a 500–1,000 ha demonstration.
