It would be hard to find anyone who is unaware of the contribution made by Charles Darwin to our understanding of evolution and the origin of species, but his many other contributions to biology are less well known. He was a keen collector of beetles and published books on topics as diverse as earthworms, orchids and barnacles. Surprisingly, it is this last-named topic that provides a parasitological connection.
