Abstract

The superorder Paracanthopterygii includes 6 orders of spiny-finned fishes commonly known as trout perches, beardfish, toadfish, clingfish, Kentucky cave fishes, anglerfish and cod. Except for the Kentucky cave fishes and trout perches, which are confined to the fresh waters of North America, they are mainly stout-bodied, marine fishes. Most are carnivores and many species are viviparous. Some occur in shallow waters, for example the toadfish and the clingfish which attaches to stones by means of a pelvic sucker, but the majority are deep-sea forms.
