Abstract
The introduction of modern transportation technology in West Africa between the 1880s and the present has been closely associated with political, social and economic transformation which occurred in that region during the past ninety years. Among the more spatially evident phenomena in the evolution of the socio-economic environment was the rise of urban growth poles in virtually every West African country. In this paper, a number of interactions between the transportation system and urban development will be discussed.
This is a revised version of a paper in ‘The role of Transportation in the urban development of West Africa’, presented at an international symposium on urban growth in Africa, Bordeaux, October 1970.
