Abstract
This chapter is intended for the newcomer to Apollo workstations, and very little knowledge of computer systems is assumed. However, it is expected that the reader has access to an Apollo workstation which is either a stand-alone machine, or is part of a network. The model of the workstation is not important. The sections in this chapter are intended to introduce the reader to some basic concepts related to the Apollo operating system (called Aegis), and to the workstations themselves. These include the directory structure, log-in and log-out procedures, and the way in which text files may be created and the text manipulated by means of special purpose keys. Although it is the authors’ intention to avoid the use of specialist terminology whenever possible, some basic words and expressions are introduced.
