Abstract
Chile’s is one of the oldest labour movements in Latin America, the Chilean and Mexican labour movements being the first to organise on a nationwide basis, and the first to achieve legal concessions from the State. The Chilean movement harbours the only Communist Party with significant mass support on the continent, formed when the indigeneous Socialist Workers’ Party (POS) joined the Third International in 1922 – and also a much broader Marxist tradition expressed in the Communist Party’s historical rival, the Socialist Party (now fragmented), and a number of smaller groups. Labour’s support played a critical role in the 1970 election of a Marxist President to power, Salvador Allende, and trade unions have been the principal focus of opposition to the military dictatorship which overthrew his government in 1973. But labour’s impact on Chilean politics goes much deeper: not only through communists and socialists, but also through their centrist rivals, Radical and Christian Democrat (always concerned to preserve a union base), Chilean labour played a pivotal role in national politics between 1939 and 1973.
