Abstract

Although Bolivia is still predominantly an agricultural country (Table 5.1), one of the poorest in Latin America, and the conditions and living standards of its workers are among the lowest in the continent,1 the weight of organised labour in Bolivian politics has had few parallels elsewhere. During the first half of this century labour played a key role in struggles against the tin oligarchy, finally displaced from power following the mass insurrection of 1952. When a continent-wide cycle of military dictatorships invaded Bolivia in the 1960s, the parties of Opposition rallied to the COB (Central Obrera Boliviano) and organised labour became the centre of resistance to military rule.
