Abstract
The first few years after graduate school can be a fragile time in a mathematician’s career. Looking back, I see how fortunate I was to have had Max Schiffer as a postdoctoral mentor and early collaborator. In order to describe the circumstances that brought us together, I have to begin with a few words of personal history.
