The development of breast-conserving therapy (BCT) using whole-breast irradiation (WBI) to eradicate residual disease following nonablative resection of breast cancer was one of the great success stories of twentieth-century oncology. Approximately 70-80% of patients with stage I or II invasive breast cancers are estimated to be potential candidates on technical grounds for BCT.
