Lattices abound throughout many branches of Mathematics. This seems to have first been noticed by Dedekind [1897]. They are also of interest as algebraic systems. Systematic study began in the 1930s with the work of Birkhoff and Stone, and with Birkhoff’s Lattice Theory [1940]. Lattice theory unifies various parts of algebra, though perhaps less successfully than the theories in the next two chapters.
