Abstract

SEVERAL YEARS ago I bet an editor of a national astronomy magazine that the then-new discoveries about the overall nature of the Universe — described below — would not hold up. I lost (payment still due). They did hold up, discoveries that gratified cosmologists while also provoking them with awesome new challenges and uncertainties. Within this framework, that of the Universe at large, we have made major inroads into understanding its components: galaxies, their clusters, and their stars. And from the stars pour discoveries of other planets and planetary systems that lead right back to Earth, giving us a sense of our place within the structure of the Whole.
