It is hard to overstate the importance of the idea of a vector space, a concept that has found application in mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, the social sciences, and other areas. What we encounter is an abstraction of the idea of vector space that we studied in calculus or high school geometry. These “geometrical vectors” can easily be visualized. In this chapter, abstraction will come in two waves.
