Abstract
The very air of Göttingen seemed to young Courant to be full of mathematical excitement. Even outside the lecture hall, the students talked intensely “with inspiration and real dedication” about mathematics. This enthusiasm radiated from Hilbert, a slightly built, active man whose independence, originality, and passion for the truth were as apparent in every aspect of his personality and daily life as they were in his great mathematical works.
