Abstract

In the simplistic energy balance model, cause and effect run one-way (Figure 10.1). The two limbs of energy balance—energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE)—are considered independent (exogenous) variables under our voluntary control, and body weight is the outcome of the balance between the two.
